This waterfall site has been modified by the construction of the Alexander Generating Station. The station generates 68 MW of clean power, but uses most of the river's flow to do so. Fortunately, a portion of the falls remains beside the red brick generating station, and serves as a spillway for excessive flow.
At really high flows, probably only during spring runoff, excess flow brings the falls back to life. Catching this falls at the right time can result in an impressive sight; through much of the year, however, the flow is essentially zero.
Unfortunately, you can only see the falls from across the mighty river, which here is 200 m wide. Fortunately, there is a wooden viewing platform with an intrepretive sign explaining how the generating station works.
This falls is found 16 km north on Hwy 585 from Hwy 11. An Ontario Attractions sign points to a short driveway on the right, leading to a very short hike to the viewing platform. As of 2023, the location of the viewing platform, as shown on Google Maps, was incorrect.
