This cascade is located right in the heart of the little tourist town of Bala. The falls occur where water from Bala Bay on Lake Muskoka drains to the Moon River. There are actually three waterfalls in the town. These are the largest of the three. The majority of the fall is over the dam, but there is a sizeable cascade section just downstream of the dam.
The falls was recently modified by the construction of a hydroelectric generating station. The scene hasn't been completely ruined, but this is no longer an all-natural falls. The falls still exists, but a large proportion of the flow during warmer periods can be expected to travel through the power station.
The best views are from a small town park on the north side of the center channel. There is a small parking area right in front of it, and a large one on the other side of the road.
