A pleasant, wide open spot in downtown Carleton Place. This is not much of a falls, but is still worth a pit stop. The river is about 60 m wide, and a broad, very low gradient exposure of sedimentary rock forms the rapids. A semi-circular dam immedately upstream spoils or enhances the rapids, depending on your outlook in life.
People are often seen fishing right below the falls, as the water level can be low during lower flow. As always, be careful around rushing water; flows may be dangerous at some times. The town is worth a wander too, as there are many old stone buildings including some old stone mills converted to other purposes.
Good access is provided at St. James Park on the north side of the river. Unfortunately, there is no parking at the park, and you have to find on-street parking. The coordinates provided for a parking spot are just one suggestion. There is parking available downtown on Mill Street and there may (?) be access behind the town hall.
