About Hells Gate Lower

There are six "Gates" on the Hells Gate trail. Six falls, each of which would be worth visiting on their own. Even though Kap Kig Iwan Falls is much bigger and spectacular than the Hells Gate falls, these should not be missed. It isn't often that you get this many waterfalls all within walking distance of each other. The six falls are in three groups of two, and I have grouped them here as "Upper" and "Lower" for convenience. The first and second "Gates" are visible from the picnic shelter near the parking lot. A trail leads upstream and you can walk right up to each. The third is right around the corner. After the third falls the trail veers into the woods for about 5-8 mins before reappearing at the river side, taking you to the "Upper" series of the 4th, 5th and 6th falls. The lower 3 falls are somewhat larger than the upper 3, and it is very difficult to get close to the 6th (smallest) falls. I've been told that parts of the trail can be under water during high spring freshet flows.
