Maitland Falls is a very low, very wide step across the Maitland River. The step is 150 m wide, but is only perhaps 1-2 m high in total. A number of notches along the step create little nooks and crannies, some of which become dry when the river flow is low. During this time, people have carefully walked out on to the rocky river bed above the falls.
This is a very low falls, but it is popular with visitors and persons staying in the campground. Of all the watersheds feeding southern Ontario waterfalls, this is probably the largest.
There may be several other very small steps along this stretch of this large river. For example, there is a second similar falls, albeit smaller, located about 500 m to the north. I'm not sure if it can be reached from the park.
On the far side of the river, a road aptly named Little Falls Rd is private and blocks public access to this downstream falls. There is a wide, flat, bedrock channel reach at BenMiller, and which can be seen from the bridge at Benmiller Line - 43.7182, -81.6262.
If you canoe the river, and find more interesting bedrock stretches, please let me know. the driving directions lead you to the gate of the Falls Reserve Conservation Authority. Follow the driveway to the long parking area, and find the falls just beyond the open field.
