This site used to be called 'Arklan Rapids' in earlier versions of this web site. The Arklan Rapids are actually found further downstream, and may be visible from Anthony Cumo Park. Rosamond Rapids is a long, gently sloped rock rapids on the Mississippi River in the east end of Carleton Place.
This is not much of a waterfall, and you shouldn't go out of your way to see it. But the rapids, while very low, are attractive. From the one lane bridge that carries Gillies St, you can see the rapids upstream and downstream. The edge of the river is lined with low sedimentary rock outcrops on the downstream side.
There are several old stone mills in the vicinity, including one on the left side of the river, right beside the rapids. Other historic buildings are to be found in the town, and it is worth a quick tour to see the industrial heritage.
Previously, you could walk downstream from the bridge on the right side of the river. In the late 2010s, this trail was blocked when development of this property began; the site will house condos that overlook the river.
As this site is undergoing development and construction, the parking situation may be in flux. The directions on this site lead to a small gravel area just west of the bridge.
