Many people that visit Sand River Falls are unaware that there is a separate upper falls just a little further upstream. After visiting the lower cluster of falls, the river becomes much more serene. However, it soon bends to the right and the large falls comes into view in the distance. Another 5 minutes of hiking and visitors reach an excellent vantage point.
The falls are more impressive than they look in photos. That is, unless you visit in mid to late summer when flows have declined dramatically.
There is a dedicated parking lot for the falls. You are required to purchase admission to Lake Superior Provincial Park in order to enjoy this spot. After visiting the lower falls, continue to follow the trail upstream for about 8-10 minutes. The trail is manageable for most visitors, but would not be suitable for those with mobility challenges.
From the top of the upper falls to Lake Superior, the river drops more than 40 m in a distance of just 1 km.
