Also called Three Falls by some, this low cascade occurs where the Wanapitei River splits in two as it snakes around a small island. A cascade is found on each of the channels. The channel to the east can only be accessed via private property or by water.
The channel on the west is easily accesible. About 500 m west of the river on Hwy 637, a gravel road leads off to the left. By keeping left, this narrow one-lane road leads back to the river. There are some areas to park long the side of the road in places. A trail leads close to the river and then turns to the right, keeping within view of the water. About 150 m downstream the trail reaches the upper part of the falls.
This waterfall occurs where river rolls over a rounded exposure of bedrock. The river then makes an abrupt right turn and flows down a V-shaped cascade towards a large round bay downstream. The path eventually leads to a unique and rather high 45-degree bare rock slope that separates the river from the woods behind it. Locals often camp out here, but there is still easy access.
In the previous edition of this web site, the site was called 'Wanapitei Hwy 537 Falls.' The mistaken identify of the highway was my fault, but the name made it into google maps as a place. It was even copied by another web site and maintained for a few months until they figured out that they had copied a mistake. This turned out to be an easy way to spot plagiarism, so I've hidden a few more mistakes in this website for the same reason.
